|"Rufus & Faye " first opened the cafe
2 days after Easter in 1985. A Game Room was added in Feb. of 1999 and converted to a Gift Shop in Aug. of 2001. Cafe is located in the Philip Kehl building that he built in 1910. First floor walls were built by hand poured cement 13 inches thick & the upper story was made out of cement blocks that were cemented on top of the concrete walls. Mr.Kehl also owned a cement block producing plant in Austin.
The cafe ceiling is made from embossed metal, the original wood floors are still in wonderful condition though they have been refinished a few times. You can still see marks on the walls from the shelves that once lined both walls that held merchandise when it was a mercantile store at one time. The building survived the big flood in 1937 that washed part of the town away. In the basement there is a corner under the main dining room that once held ice that was cut from the river in the wintertime to be used for iceboxes and cold storage. The ice blocks were then slid into the basement. The chute was covered over in 2001 when a new sidewalk was built. Come on in and look at some history; we even have pictures of the flood for you to view on the counter.
